MIEN Magazine’s Charm School pilot weekend
MIEN Magazine’s Charm School pilot weekend

Escape the digital world and retreat to a more genteel analogue sanctuary. Welcome to the inaugural pilot session of Charm School at West Lexham in the beautiful Norfolk countryside. The weekend will focus on the back to basics of etiquette: don’t think posh, think simplicity. Put away your mobiles and iPads as they will be replaced with a feather quill and beautiful stationery.

You’ll be greeted with a lovely cocktail upon arrival, then a relaxed and delightful meal with your fellow charmers where we will discuss the art of conversation and dining with a group. Then sit back and forget about the outside world – we shall retreat to the parlour where we will learn about the technique to the Art and Science of Tranquillity, Serenity and Calm. You’re sure to get a dreamy night’s rest.

Following our first mannerly evening, we will wake up to take a walk in the garden and enjoy gentle exercises along with a few tips on posture (which is more important than ever in our hurried and stressful modern existence). Then, it’s a leisurely afternoon where you have the choice of a spot of croquet, a little relax by the pool, or maybe a little boating if you fancy.

Other Charm School activities will include games in the parlour, learning about gardening and topiary, afternoon tea, messing about by the river, pressing wildflowers, writing letters, and a few more treats in store.

Who is the course for?

City folk who want to breathe country air, requiring a little refresher in polite pursuits. Charm School will remind you what it feels like to unwind from the chaos, soothing the furrowed brow and smog of the city.

A bit of fresh air and spot of relaxation will make you more charming

A spot of social graces, fresh air, and rest will make you happier and more charming...

Course tutor

Dana Gornitzki is your Mistress of Manners, the polite (and sometimes cheeky) etiquette angel on your shoulder. Dana comes from the media world, and is the editor of MIEN Magazine as well as the creative director of the Parlour.

Special guest instructor to lead the Art and Science of Tranquillity, Serenity and Calm.

Together, we will unwind at West Lexham. You won’t want to return to the big smoke.

What you will need to bring

Your favourite pen or writing utensil
A cherished poem
A notebook
A smart set of clothing for our Saturday evening meal
The rest will be confirmed upon registration.

That photograph is no advertisement for a charm school! I and my fellow Dowagers were most provoked by the unshaven young man’s gaping maw, and the “girl”s blatant use of a cheap steak knife for salad. I’m sure the Dowagers would be pleased to act as consultant’s for your ostensibly worthy effort.

Dear Lady Woodhead
Many thanks for your note, and am so sorry to hear that you and your fellow Dowagers are feeling so provoked. I quite agree, the behaviour of both the woman and man (please note that I have not used gentle here) in this image is most unacceptable; we are very much on the same page as the pair in the photograph show how *not* to behave rather than being a good example as we set out at our modest and most genteel charm school.
It would be lovely to hear more from you and please feel free to scribe a piece on table manners as you and the Dowagers see fit. Perhaps, we can publish on this digital space? I have tried to take a peek at your journal, but it seems that I need approval on the link you provided to the social network Facebook.
Thanks again and humble apologies if your heart(s) skipped a beat - I assure you we are all in this together.
Yours truly
